The town of Washington has historic connections with the Americs's first president, George Washington.
The Old Hall in Washington was built in the twelfth centry by William de Hertburn who then took the name of the area to become William de Wessyngton. The Washington family moved to Northamptonshire in 1539.
The Old Hall was rebuilt in the seventeenth century although parts of the Great Hall are parts of the medieval Washington family home.
The town was involved with the coal industry and in the nineteenth century, the chemical industry.
A 4,000 year old canoe was found near Washington in the River Wear.
